Paruresis

EDM number 583 in 2001-02, proposed by Howard Stoate on 13/12/2001.

That this House welcomes the recent inaugural World Toilet Summit in Singapore and in particular its focus on paruresis or bashful bladder syndrome, the fear of using public conveniences, a little recognised and under reported condition which affects almost four million people in the United Kingdom, and which can greatly limit sufferers' social activity, holidays and even employment opportunities as well as affecting sufferers' mental health and potentially causing serious medical complications; and calls for a wide-ranging national campaign by the Government to increase public awareness of the condition and reduce the stigma attached to it as well as encouraging more sufferers to come forward for treatment.

This motion has been signed by a total of 7 MPs.
