Export Controls And Tanzania

EDM number 547 in 2001-02, proposed by Tony Worthington on 11/12/2001.

That this House is concerned that Her Majesty's Government is about to give permission for the export of an air traffic control system with military capabilities to Tanzania at a cost of $40 million; notes that this proposal was condemned by the World Bank who stated that a $10 million system would meet Tanzania's needs; is disturbed that one part of Her Majesty's Government has rightly played a full part in the cancellation of debt for Tanzania, one of the poorest countries in the world, but that another part of Her Majesty's Government may be about to increase the debt on an unnecessary project; calls for the reinstatement of substainable development as a ground for restriction in the Export Control Bill; and further calls on Her Majesty's Government not to make a decision on this matter until the International Development Committee has had an opportunity to look at this proposal.

This motion has been signed by a total of 110 MPs.
