EDM number 533 in 2001-02, proposed by Andrew George on 06/12/2001.
That this House notes that 12th December marks the 100th anniversary of the first transatlantic wireless transmission, from Poldhu in Cornwall to St. John's Newfoundland, by Guglielmo Marconi; welcomes the introduction of a commemorative two-pound coin to celebrate the anniversary; applauds Her Royal Majesty the Queen for sending a handwritten message to be transmitted via wireless to the Governor General of Canada; urges the Radiocommunication Agency and others to ensure that the widest possible publicity is given to bring this historically significant anniversary to the attention of a wider audience; would welcome the wider publication and availability of the RA's excellent synopsis of Marconi's work available on its website; and congratulates the Poldhu Amateur Radio Club for its efforts in operating its station on the day of the anniversary which will allow many radio amateurs the opportunity to contact the station.
