Tobacco Advertising And Promotion

EDM number 51 in 2001-02, proposed by David Taylor on 28/06/2001.

That this House welcomes Government attempts to tackle the 120,000 smoking related deaths annually; regrets the absence of a bill to ban tobacco advertising in its legislative programme for the current session; believes that this legislation would save 3,000 lives each year; applauds governments, such as Finland, New Zealand, Poland and Thailand that have banned tobacco advertising and seen tobacco related deaths drop; agrees with Professor Sir George Alberti of the Royal College of Physicians that the children we fail to protect from tobacco advertising today will be our patients with cancer and heart disease tomorrow; notes that the recent Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Bill is a good basis for a private member's bill; urges the Government to support any such Bill; and calls upon the Government to introduce a ban on tobacco advertising in this session.

This motion has been signed by a total of 129 MPs.
