Hiv/aids In Developing Countries
EDM number 470 in 2001-02, proposed by Neil Gerrard on 23/11/2001.
That this House believes that the HIV/AIDS epidemic in developing countries is one of the greatest threats to international development, reversing progress made on poverty reduction over the last three decades and undermining the international development targets; recognises that this damage is already especially visible in sub-Saharan Africa but continuing to worsen worldwide in both developing and industrialised countries with 15,000 new cases every day; further recognises that money is not the whole answer but that knowledge of how to address this epidemic already exists; and calls on the Government to commit much greater and new ongoing resources to the international response to HIV/AIDS through prevention, treatment and care and social and political change to address stigma and discrimination.
