Esso
EDM number 409 in 2001-02, proposed by Alistair Carmichael on 13/11/2001.
That this House notes with concern the higher cost of fuel in rural and island communities; further notes that the private car for many people in such areas is the only meaningful form of transport and that the high cost of petrol and diesel threatens the social and economic viability of some of our most vulnerable communities; therefore condemns the decision by ESSO to deny access to fuel at UK average prices to their agency card holders in Orkney and Shetland; and calls on the Office of Fair Trading to look again at this decision by ESSO and to allow businesses in Orkney and Shetlands the same opportunities to compete as businesses elsewhere in the country.
