Peerage Titles
EDM number 372 in 2001-02, proposed by Martin Linton on 07/11/2001.
That this House welcomes the assurance from the Leader of the House that the link between a title and a seat in Parliament will disappear forever under the proposals in the House of Lords White Paper; but urges him to go further and let all the titles of the peerage disappear forever rather than have them hang around as a feudal leftover; believes that there is no point in keeping the titles of baron, viscount, earl, marquess and duke when they no longer entitle the holder to anything; and further that, if they are retained as 'marks of honour', they will devalue other titles in the honours system.
