Pearce Institute In Govan

EDM number 301 in 2001-02, proposed by Mohammad Sarwar on 24/10/2001.

That this House recognises the importance of the Pearce Institute since its foundation in 1902 by Lady Dinah Pearce, wife of William Pearce. the first honourable Member for Govan, as a community resource for Govan and Glasgow; understand that a number of city-wide and national groups also use the building for meetings and offices, such as Glasgow Braendam Link and the Iona Community; notes that the trustees have accepted the recommendation of the management committee to close the Institute within weeks, after mounting financial crisis; welcomes the efforts of the local community, elected representatives and public agencies in exhausting every possibility to safeguard the Pearce Institute as a resource at the heart of Govan; acknowledges the commitment of Her Majesty's Government and the Scottish Executive to building partnerships for social inclusion in areas such as Govan; and calls for every effort to be made in supporting moves to save the Pearce Institute for the people of Govan.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
