Independent Public Enquiry Into Army Deaths
EDM number 1849 in 2001-02, proposed by Annabelle Ewing on 05/11/2002.
That this House congratulates the bravery and determination for justice of the bereaved families who attended the meeting in the House of Commons on Tuesday 29th October, whose sons and daughters died in non-combat situations while serving in Her Majesty's Armed Forces; notes that the families of the four soldiers who died at the Deep Cut Barracks in Surrey - the late Sean Benton from Hastings, England, Private Cheryl James from Llangollen, Wales, Private Geoff Gray from Hackney, London, and Private James Collinson from Perth, Scotland - were joined by bereaved families from across the UK whose loved ones died in or near other UK army barracks; extends our deep sorrow to the families and friends of all of these victims; believes that the conduct of the Ministry of Defence in relation to these deaths has not been consistent with its duty of care towards young soldiers; and supports the 'Justice for James' campaign of the Scottish Sunday Express, which is seeking a full and independent public inquiry into the causes and circumstances of the death of Mr James Collinson and of all other service personnel who have died in circumstances which have not been explained to the satisfaction of the bereaved families.
