Future Of The UK Fishing Industry

EDM number 1847 in 2001-02, proposed by David Lidington on 04/11/2002.

That this House notes the despair with which recent plans to close cod fishing grounds have been received in North Sea fishing communities, and particularly in Scotland, where 20,000 jobs are now at risk; calls on the Government to make clear how it intends to respond to the Commission's proposals; and believes that this vital industry will only flourish again when national control of United Kingdom waters is restored and when fishermen and local communities have a genuine role in managing fish stocks.

This motion has been signed by a total of 23 MPs.
