Electro-Convulsive Therapy
EDM number 1843 in 2001-02, proposed by Wayne David on 31/10/2002.
That this House expresses its concern about the continued use of electro-convulsive therapy, commonly known as electric shock treatment, especially as strong reservations have been expressed by patients' groups and members of the medical profession; and believes that the recent report by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence has highlighted the lack of conclusive research regarding the effectiveness and, arguably, the appropriateness of ECT for patients suffering from a range of mental illnesses.
