Private Action, Public Benefit
EDM number 1818 in 2001-02, proposed by Adrian Bailey on 28/10/2002.
That this House welcomes the recommendations listed in The Cabinet Office's strategy unit report 'Private Action, Public Benefit - A Review of Charities and the Wider Not-for-Profit Sector'; notes that among the recommendations the Report calls for the modernisation of laws governing co-operatives and community benefit societies and recommends that community benefit societies should also have the option, following a vote of members, to be able to choose to protect their assets in perpetuity for a public purpose and prohibit conversion into a company, thus enabling them to provide public services at a community level; and urges the Government to introduce legislation in the next Queen's Speech to push forward reform of charities and the wider not-for-profit sector.
This motion has been signed by a total of 33 MPs.
