Trial Of Marwan Barghouti
EDM number 1726 in 2001-02, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 24/09/2002.
That this House notes that Marwan Barghouti, elected representative of the Palestinian Legislative Council, was abducted by Israel on 15th April in contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention and that since that time Mr Barghouti has been imprisoned and subjected to torture, also in contravention of the fourth Geneva Convention; further notes that the trial of Mr Barghouti starts on 3rd October and that Nelson Mandela has declared 'What is happening to Barghouti is exactly the same as what happened to me. The government tried to de-legitimise the African National Congress and its armed struggle by putting me on trial'; believes that it is necessary to ensure that the trial of Mr Barghouti is monitored internationally; calls upon the Government to send official observers to ensure that it is conducted in accordance with international law; and urges concerned honourable Members of the House to attend the trial if possible and disseminate information to the House.
