Early Day Motions Of More Than One Sentence
EDM number 1701 in 2001-02, proposed by Richard Burden on 23/07/2002.
That this House calls for the modernisation of the parliamentary rules regarding early day motions and in particular the requirement for a motion to be confined to one sentence; believes that it leads to poor expression, bad grammar, needless lists and excessive use of semi-colons, techniques which set poor grammatical standards unworthy of honourable Members; notes that a maximum word limit would suffice as a replacement ruling that would still encourage brevity; and resolves to end the requirement for early day motions to be no more than one sentence.
This motion has been signed by a total of 25 MPs.
