Treatment Of Mental Health Conditions
EDM number 1638 in 2001-02, proposed by John Horam on 16/07/2002.
That this House recognises the importance of multidisciplinary treatment for people with mental health conditions; notes the strength of evidence supporting the use of physiotherapy for the treatment of mental health conditions, relieving symptons and improving quality of life; notes that standards within the National Service Framework for Mental Health aim to address social exclusion, access, reducing risk, mental health promotion and prevention of suicides; further notes the important role which specialist mental health physiotherapists have to further these standards; is alarmed that some NHS trusts are planning to disband or reduce their specialist mental health physiotherapy teams to the detriment of vulnerable patients; further notes that as a result many patients will no longer be guaranteed specialist physiotherapy treatment; calls on the Government to review the National Service Framework for Mental Health in close consultation with relevant health professionals; and further calls on the Government to produce national guidance to NHS trusts, strategic health authorities and primary care trusts outlining their commitment to mental health physiotherapy services.
