Beacon Council Status

EDM number 1636 in 2001-02, proposed by Joyce Quin on 16/07/2002.

That this House congratulates warmly Gateshead, Sunderland, Knowsley and Nottingham councils in being awarded Beacon status in recognition of their successes in promoting economic regeneration through culture, sport and tourism; considers that their achievements highlight the important role of the cultural sector in increasing employment and prosperity; and applauds the ways in which the councils concerned have continued their existing cultural heritage with exciting modern developments which are bringing about much needed and high quality regeneration.
