EDM number 1632 in 2001-02, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 16/07/2002.
That this House congratulates the International League for the Protection of Horses on the successes to date of its campaign over many years to improve the conditions under which live horses are transported for slaughter; wishes all success to its proposed Transportation Awareness Ride around the country starting on 27th July to promote a nine point plan for amendments to the EU Exports Directive to include compulsory 24 hour rest on entry to the EU, individual partitions so that horses may travel separately, improved vehicle construction for adequate provision of feed and water and temperature control, thorough training of transporters and staff involved in handling equines being transported in order to minimise distress, detailed journey plans of the entire journey prior to entering and on entering the EU, thorough veterinary inspection before the start of the journey, a requirement for third countries to adopt EU legislation, adoption and compliance with the directive in its entirety by each EU member country, and assistance for setting up abattoirs in source countries to encourage a move to a carcass-only trade; and encourages all honourable Members who can to join or at least to support the Transportation Awareness Ride when it is in their area or at its conclusion in the Royal Mews on 2nd September.
