Jarvis Plc

EDM number 1627 in 2001-02, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 15/07/2002.

That this House notes that Mr Steven Norris, a non-executive director of rail maintenance contractor Jarvis, stated repeatedly on behalf of his company following the Potters Bar derailment that the cause of the crash was sabotage; wonders if Jarvis deliberately placed this theory into the public domain in order to avoid blame for the crash and to protect their commercial interests; notes the findings of the Health and Safety Executive progress report of 4th July, which found that the Potters Bar derailment resulted from faults in the points and that no evidence has yet been established to support speculation or theories that vandalism or deliberate unauthorised interference caused the derailment; recalls that Mr Norris has stated that his credibility was on the line over the derailment; notes with concern that Jarvis is now poised to take responsiblity for maintenance of the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly Lines on the London Underground; and calls upon the Secretary of State to protect Londoners from this fate.
