Euro Referendum Date (No. 2)

EDM number 1626 in 2001-02, proposed by John Barrett on 15/07/2002.

That this House welcomes the recommendation of the independent Electoral Commission that a referendum on United Kingdom entry in the European Single currency should not be held on the same day as elections to the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Assembly, Northern Ireland Assembly and local councils throughout the United Kingdom; agrees with the Commission's conclusions that although there might be a beneficial increase in overall turnout, combining the various polls would cause significant confusion amongst voters and create considerable difficulty in administration; and calls on the Government to rule out 1st May 2003 as a potential date for a Euro referendum to end the current speculation and uncertainty.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
