The Sikh Community
EDM number 1607 in 2001-02, proposed by Khalid Mahmood on 10/07/2002.
That this House recognises the considerable contribution made to society by Sikhs; recognises also that their participation in government departments, local authorities, public bodies, the voluntary sector and most of all the business community is vital; believes that, in accepting that the Race Relations (Amendment Act) recognises Sikhs as a separate ethnic group, it is essential that the estimated 700,000 British Sikh community be given proper protection from discrimination and provision of services; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to issue guidelines to enable separate monitoring of Sikhs to ensure a fair and equitable provision of services.
