John Charles

EDM number 1565 in 2001-02, proposed by Chris Ruane on 04/07/2002.

That this House recognises the contribution of John Charles to Welsh, European and world football; notes that he was the first British player to succeed in Italy when he was bought by Juventus for ú57,000 in 1957; further notes that his personal record of 31 Welsh caps, his prolific goalscoring capability of 30 goals in the first season with Leeds and 42 in his second season and his captaincy of the Welsh side in the 1958 World Cup finals; and applauds his sportsmanship as he was never booked or sent off in his long footballing career.
