Preventing Maternal And Neonatal Tetanus In The Developing World
EDM number 1467 in 2001-02, proposed by Jackie Lawrence on 18/06/2002.
That this House is appalled that each year over 200,000 babies and 30,000 mothers in the developing world die from being infected with tetanus during the birth process; notes that this can be prevented easily by three simple vaccinations administered to a mother during her pregnancy; commends the work of UNICEF in providing these vaccinations and safe birthing kits containing basic sterile items to prevent the spread of the deadly tetanus bacteria to both mother and baby; and commends their efforts to highlight the needless loss of life from this entirely preventable condition.
