Jarvis Profits
EDM number 1443 in 2001-02, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 13/06/2002.
That this House notes the sharp rise in pre-tax profits for Jarvis, the infrastructure services firm responsible for track maintenance at the time of the Potters Bar rail crash, from ú24.8 million last year to ú45.8 million this year; recognises that the taxpayers money in the form of subsidies invested into the rail network is going straight to profits for private companies, raises concern over the current methods of contracting out maintenance work and the consequences of contractors competing for work against one another; and calls on the Government to change the present arrangements for contracting out maintenance work so that contractors do not cut corners in order to compete on costs and rail safety is made the number one priority.
