Cyprus (No.3)
EDM number 1439 in 2001-02, proposed by Andrew Dismore on 13/06/2002.
That this House welcomes the continuing talks between the leaders of the Cypriot communities, begun on 16th January this year, discussing proposals for a settlement in Cyprus; expresses alarm that at this sensitive time the cases of sedition against the leading opposition Turkish Cypriot politicians, Izzet Izcan and Ozker Ozker of the Patriotic Unity Movement, have been revived and that they are required to appear before a Turkish military court on 25th June; congratulates the Bicommunal Choir for Peace in Cyprus for its concert in Istanbul on 15th May, attracting an audience of 1,000 mainly Turks from Turkey, chanting in Turkish 'nothing can stop peace in Cyprus'; but regrets that Turkish Cypriot teachers who sang at the concert are under investigation and other teachers in northern occupied Cyprus have lost their jobs for writing about the situation there; and reaffirms its conviction that a solution for Cyprus will be positive for all countries in the region and people living there, allowing Cyprus to enter the European Union as a reunited island, and helping Turkey's own negotiations for accession and its new constructive engagement with its neighbour in the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece.
