Reduced Fares On South Central
EDM number 1400 in 2001-02, proposed by Norman Baker on 10/06/2002.
That this House warmly welcomes the decision by the train operating company South Central to reduce markedly season ticket fares on the lines from Lewes to Seaford and Eastbourne; notes the Eastbourne to Lewes price has now been cut from ú23.20 to ú15.00 a week and the Seaford to Lewes price from ú15.00 to just ú10.00; believes this provides a real incentive for drivers on the parallel A26 and A27 trunk road into Lewes to transfer from road to rail thereby relieving congestion, reducing pollution and easing pressure on Lewes town centre; further believes that the wider applications and potential of this scheme should be considered both by the Department of Transport and the South-Coast Multi-Modal Study; notes the initiative is supported by Lewes District and East Sussex county councils; and calls on those authorities and other major public and private sector employers in Lewes to follow suit.
