ST ALBAN'S DAY

EDM number 1395 in 2001-02, proposed by Kerry Pollard on 10/06/2002.

That this House notes that 22nd June is St Alban's Day; further notes that St Alban was the first English martyr; recognises that St Alban was noted for sacrifice and helping others while St George was a soldier whose fame rests on fighting and killing a mythical dragon; notes that there is archaeological evidence for the existence of St Alban, while informed opinion agrees that St George did not exist; calls upon the Government to make 22nd June a national holiday, when the English people could emulate the national saint by carrying out voluntary work; and further calls on the Government to make St Alban, rather than St George, the patron saint of England.

This motion has been signed by a total of 5 MPs.
