500th Anniversary Of The Discovery Of The Island Of St Helena
EDM number 1302 in 2001-02, proposed by Bob Russell on 14/05/2002.
That this House sends greetings to the people of the Island of St. Helena on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Island's discovery on 21st May 1502; is delighted that Parliament was able to restore full British citizenship to residents, who are strongly proud of their British heritage, in time for the anniversary celebrations; notes that this tiny island in the South Atlantic played an important strategic role in the days of the British Empire; urges the Government to honour its obligations to today's residents by helping to develop a sustainable economy, including the building of an airfield, with greater employment and education opportunities; and wishes the citizens of St. Helena, more generally known as 'saints', good fortune and greater prosperity in the years ahead.
