East Timorese Independence
EDM number 1297 in 2001-02, proposed by Michael Moore on 14/05/2002.
That this House congratulates East Timor on its forthcoming independence on 20th May; recognises that East Timor is the first new independent state of the 21st century; congratulates the United Nations Transitional Administration of East Timor on its successful peacekeeping operation since October 1999, and wishes every success to the new UN Mission to East Timor from 20th May; notes with concern that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office list East Timor's only export as coffee, which is a market with extremely depressed world prices; recognises the challenges facing the country in sustaining its fragile economy, particularly in the short term, before the implementation of the Australian Timor Gap Agreement on oil and gas reserves comes into effect in 2004; therefore calls on the Indonesian Government to maintain its support for the independent sovereignty of East Timor, and to aid and support the repatriation of the estimated 80,000 refugees still currently residing in West Timor, Indonesia and to refrain from any actions that would have the effect of undermining the development of a stable and successful East Timor; and further calls on Her Majesty's Government to offer political and economic support as necessary to President Xanana Gusmao and his administration in building a secure, peaceful and prosperous country.
