Retirement Of Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner John Grieve

EDM number 1280 in 2001-02, proposed by Diane Abbott on 10/05/2002.

That this House notes that Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner John Grieve has recently retired; recognises his excellent work record which includes 14 police commendations and awards for outstanding courage, leading the metropolitan Police's anti-terrorist unit and ensuring that the police deal in a more effective way with cases of domestic violence; notes that as head of the Race and Violent Crimes Task Force he ensured that the police took race crimes more seriously and sought to make London a safer place for ethnic communities; also notes that he was brave for speaking out for institutional change within the police service in the wake of the Stephen Lawrence murder and report of Sir William Macpherson; calls upon police forces throughout the country to ensure that progressive officers of the ilk of John Grieve are in senior positions; and wishes him a long, happy and healthy retirement.
