Release Of Aung San Suu Kyi

EDM number 1255 in 2001-02, proposed by Ashok Kumar on 08/05/2002.

That this House congratulates Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi on being freed from home arrest; welcomes the decision by the Government of Burma to release her after nearly 20 months; concurs with the statement, made upon her release, that the real breakthrough would be for all people in Burma to enjoy basic human rights; and urges the United Kingdom Government to ensure that the freeing of Aung San Suu Kyi is only the beginning of a political process which includes the acknowledgement of the legitimacy of Burma's democratically elected representatives.

This motion has been signed by a total of 100 MPs.
