The Red Flag
EDM number 1217 in 2001-02, proposed by Llew Smith on 30/04/2002.
That this House notes the 150th anniversary of the birth in 1852 of Jim Connell, who wrote The Red Flag; recalls Connell worked on Keir Hardie's newspaper, the Labour Leader and was also secretary of the Workingmen's Legal Aid Society during the last 20 years of his life; recognises the relevance of the words in the Red Flag: 'well recalls the triumphs past, it gives the hope of peace at last, the banner bright, the symbol plain, of human right and human gain'; and makes a commitment to these and other sentiments in The Red Flag, including to keep the red flag flying for many May days to come.
