That this House notes with concern the serious deterioration in the human and democratic rights in Eritrea; further notes the arrest of 11 former members of the government who asked for reforms in September 2001 as well as 10 journalists who are currently on hunger strike, and the persecution of ex-liberation fighters who view the government's actions critically, university students and elder citizens who have attempted to mediate between President Isaias Afeworki and the reformers; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to express its concern about the safety and health of detainees, all of who are still being held in incommunicado detention without charge, and to press for the Eritrean authorities to take immediate action to ensure that the situation of the detainees is resolved in strict accordance with international and regional human rights standards.
