North-South High-Speed Rail Line
EDM number 1107 in 2001-02, proposed by Mark Lazarowicz on 10/04/2002.
That this House welcomes the proposal to construct a new high-speed passenger-only rail link between London, the north of England, and Scotland; recognises that such a link would dramatically reduce journey times and as a result bring a significant switch of passengers to rail away from congested roads and air routes, create additional capacity for freight traffic elsewhere on the rail system, and bring immense economic benefits to many communities along its route; and urges the Government and the Strategic Rail Authority to give an early commitment in principle to the construction of such a link.
This motion has been signed by a total of 70 MPs.
