EDM number 1036 in 2001-02, proposed by Doug Naysmith on 20/03/2002.

That this House wishes Bristol every success in its campaign to become European Capital of Culture 2008; congratulates Bristol 2008 on their exciting bid which draws on Bristol's culture as a radical and creative city of pioneers and explorers with a tradition of experimentation, innovation and discovery, a city of enterprise where people work together; further congratulates Bristol 2008 on their inclusive approach to constructing the bid, actively engaging and involving local and regional stakeholders; believes that the bid showcases the very best of Bristol and the South West including its creative industries, successful public/private partnerships and dynamic arts and entertainments scene; notes that the whole of the South West is behind the city's campaign, which if successful will bring immeasurable benefits to the region in terms of employment, tourism and transport; and further believes that Bristol has the ultimate winning formula to become European Capital of Culture for 2008.
