Movement Of Humanitarian Aid
EDM number 82 in 2000-01, proposed by Bob Laxton on 12/12/2000.
That this House notes with concern that the Communication Workers Union Humanitarian Aid Charity recently sent a convoy of eight vehicles to deliver food, clothes, medicines etc to poor children in Moldova, a country recently declared the poorest in Europe; further notes that the convoy of eight vehicles had to pay ú2,500 to various governments for the privilege of travelling through their countries; further notes that ú2,000 of this money was paid to Romanian officials; and calls upon the governments involved to re-appraise their policies and to formulate a common agreement relating to the overland movement of humanitarian aid so that aid moves through their countries cost free, otherwise there is a danger that charities like the CWUHA will cease to operate leaving many needy people without hope.
