Climate Change Levy
EDM number 503 in 2000-01, proposed by Joan Ruddock on 29/03/2001.
That this House congratulates the Government on introducing the climate change levy, which takes effect from 1st April; recognises that climate change is the most important environmental challenge facing us and that action will be needed by all sectors of society to reduce our energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions; notes that the Royal Commissiion on Environmental Pollution advocates cuts of carbon dioxide emissions by 60 per cent. of 1990 levels by 2050; believes that the climate change levy will be an effective tool in reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions; and regrets the policy of the Conservative Party to oppose the climate change levy, a policy which demonstrates total disregard for the impact of climate change on the environment.
