Robert Hamill Inquiry

EDM number 496 in 2000-01, proposed by Kevin McNamara on 28/03/2001.

That this House notes that the circumstances of the death of Robert Hamill and its subsequent investigation by the police have given rise to public anxiety and allegations of serious misconduct against those acting on behalf of the state; further notes that these allegations are sufficiently widespread and have sufficient credibility to undermine public confidence in the rule of law; believes that a public inquiry would be the most effective means of establishing the merit of allegations and restoring public confidence; believes that there is no inconsistency between a decision that there be an inquiry and the continuation of the criminal investigation or the investigation of the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman; believes that the killing and circumstances around it would allow an inquiry to be given proper and clear terms of reference; believes that such matter should not be 'traded' in political negotiations; and urges the Government to establish a public inquiry without delay.
