RAPE OF WOMEN IN JAPANESE 'COMFORT STATIONS'
EDM number 468 in 2000-01, proposed by Alan Simpson on 20/03/2001.
That this House notes that between 1931 and 1945 Japan systematically rounded up over 200,000 girls and young women in occupied territories and forced them to work as sex slaves for the Japanese military; further notes that girls as young as 10 years old were systematically raped and tortured in these government 'comfort stations' and that only 25 per cent. of the 200,000 women forced into these camps survived the war; welcomes the fact that survivors are now seeking legal justice against the Japanese Government in the international courts; and rejects any attempt by Japan to claim 'sovereign immunity' to avoid legal responsibility for these crimes against humanity.
