Closure Of J.sainsbury Supermarkets
EDM number 456 in 2000-01, proposed by Patrick Hall on 15/03/2001.
That this House expresses serious concern at J. Sainsbury plc's decision to close town centre retail food stores in Ashford, Bedford, Dagenham, Greenford, Hemel Hempstead, Prestwich, Purley and Sutton Coldfield, which will disadvantage customers, especially those on lower incomes, who do not have ready access to a car, many of them elderly, and furthermore risks undermining the viability of the town centres affected; and calls for Sir Peter Davis, Group Chief Executive of J. Sainsbury plc, to halt the closures pending a review and discussions with local communities, councils and honourable and Right honourable Members.
This motion has been signed by a total of 9 MPs.
