Countryside March
EDM number 391 in 2000-01, proposed by Brian Sedgemore on 01/03/2001.
That this House is concerned that the magazine Country Life is unable to keep abreast of the news in rural areas; notes that in its edition of 1st March 2001, which was published long after the countryside march had been cancelled, its three page spread on the march begins 'On Sunday March 18th, hundreds of thousands of country people will descend on London...'; but congratulates Country Life for telling the public that this march is not so much a march of ordinary country folk but an indulgent weekend for very rich people; praises Ms Sally Smith for informing us that the Ritz has reduced prices to ú370 per couple per night for not only a room but a full English breakfast and the loan of a Ritz umbrella should it rain; is pleased that for less well-off marchers the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Hyde Park, will provide a room for ú300 per night with a 'soothing bubble bath' for those with sore feet; and trusts that Country Life readers will boycott the march whose main aim is not the welfare of the countryside but the defence of the barbaric sport of fox-hunting.
