Football Stadia And Safe Standing
EDM number 379 in 2000-01, proposed by Tony Clarke on 27/02/2001.
That this House notes the implementation of the Taylor report and the subsequent development of all-seater stadia within the Premier and Nationwide Leagues; recognises the advances in stadium technology throughout Europe, including those stadia within Germany to be used as part of its hosting of the 2006 World Cup; further notes the recent fact finding visits by the Football Licensing Authority and supporters' representatives to those stadia; recognises the wishes of a large number of football supporters to stand safely during matches and the potential benefits in reducing the cost of attendance to those on low incomes; is concerned at the possible danger and inconvenience to other seated spectators of large numbers of supporters standing within all-seated areas; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and the Home Secretary to conduct an urgent review of current policy to examine the feasibility of introducing safe standing areas at grounds within the Premier and Nationwide Leagues.
