Faslane Naval Base
EDM number 346 in 2000-01, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 13/02/2001.
That this House congratulates the hundreds of supporters of Trident Ploughshares, Scottish CND and the peace movement for their mass demonstration at Faslane Naval Base on 12th February; believes that this is the biggest single act of anti-nuclear direct action in Scotland for many years and that it demonstrates the huge growing opposition to nuclear weapons not only in Scotland but across the UK and the rest of the world; notes the ruling on 8th July 1996 by the International Court of Justice that 'the threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict, and in particular the principles and rules of humanitarian law' and also that 'states must never make civilians the object of attack and must consequently never use weapons that are incapable of distinguishing between civilian and military targets'; also notes that Article 35 of the Geneva Convention Protocol 1977 prohibits attacks on civilians and methods of warfare which are intended, or may be anticipated to cause widespread, long-term and severe damage to the natural environment; acknowledges that Trident and Britain's nuclear arsenal is illegal; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to heed the will of the people and de-commission Trident and the rest of Britain's illegal nuclear weapons.
