Eating Disorders Awareness Week

EDM number 329 in 2000-01, proposed by Simon Thomas on 12/02/2001.

That this House welcomes the Eating Disorders Association Awareness Week, 11th to 18th February, as an important step towards securing better national services for those with eating disorders; notes that the EDA receives 18,000 calls to its helpline each year, that 18 per cent. of these callers could die prematurely due to anorexia or bulimia nervosa and that though the need for specialist eating disorder services is increasing, many areas of the UK still have no specialist services; congratulates the EDA on expanding its services to meet these needs, including increasing by 10 per cent. the numbers it assisted last year, opening an office in London, the establishment of a Wales working party, and the production of Welsh language leaflets; and calls upon the Government to work with the EDA and other specialist organisations and healthcare professionals to ensure proper provision and funding of eating disorders services and an end to the current chronic situation.

This motion has been signed by a total of 51 MPs.
