Gm Animal Feed
EDM number 319 in 2000-01, proposed by Joan Ruddock on 09/02/2001.
That this House welcomes the recent decision of Tesco and Asda to ban meat and dairy products from farm animals fed on GM crops; notes that Tesco and Asda hold 42 per cent. of the UK grocery market between them; believes that this move sounds the death knell for GM animal feed imports into the UK; further notes the recent announcement made by Marks and Spencer that all of their fresh beef, lamb, chicken, eggs and salmon are now reared on non-GM diets, and by Safeway that they are now committed to removing ingedients that come from animals fed on GM crops from their products; notes that all the major supermarkets bar one have made a commitment to phase out GM food; calls on Somerfield to make a commitment to phase out GM-fed animal products; and further calls on the Government and the European Commission to ensure that both animal feed and all products fed on animal feed are labelled to indicate whether they contain GMOs or have been fed material containing GMOs.
