NHS TREATMENT OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
EDM number 238 in 2000-01, proposed by Martin Smyth on 23/01/2001.
That this House welcomes the announcement by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence of their decision that the three drugs currently licensed in the United Kingdom for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, Aricept, Exelon and Reminyl, should be made available through the NHS across England and Wales; recognises that this could mean a significant improvement in quality of life for thousands of sufferers and their carers; calls on the Government to continue to commit resources to research into the causes of Alzheimer's disease which, given the increasing incidence of the disease should be cost effective; and calls attention to the valuable contribution of the campaign by the Daily Mail in raising public awareness of 'postcode prescribing' in its treatment.
