Dalit Rights In India
EDM number 153 in 2000-01, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 21/12/2000.
That this House deplores the ongoing campaigns of violent discrimination against the Dalits, who are born at the bottom of India's caste system, supports the Indian Government's continuing efforts to end caste discrimination through legislative initiatives such as the Prevention of Atrocities Act; expresses its concern at the apparent inability of the Indian judiciary to deal effectively with high caste militia violence aimed at Dalits, such as the seven Dalit victims in Kambalapalli, Karnatatra in March 2000; urges the Government to support the Dalit peoples through focussed development programmes; and welcomes the excellent contribution to this of the International Dalit Solidarity Network.
This motion has been signed by a total of 33 MPs.
