Slavery In Ghana
EDM number 141 in 2000-01, proposed by Mike Hancock on 20/12/2000.
That this House is appalled by the enslavement of over 5,000 people in Ghana, who are given to traditional shrines as slaves for past offences allegedly committed by family members; notes that most of the slaves are unpaid female farm labourers working for the shrine priests, and are often raped and abused; and calls upon the government of Ghana to enforce the law to end this slavery as a matter of urgency and to ensure that those rescued from bondage are cared for and rehabilitated.
