Labour Honourable Members And The Choice Of London Mayoral Candidates

EDM number 91 in 1999-00, proposed by Simon Hughes on 24/11/1999.

That this House notes reports that London Labour honourable Members will not be able to vote secretly for their preferred London Labour mayoral candidate; condemns this extraordinary and outrageous plan which breaches the principle of a secret ballot for all elections except by elected representatives in the place to which they are elected; believes this is the latest example of control freaks running the new Labour Party; fears it will lead to political disadvantage for Labour honourable Members who do not support the candidate preferred by the party leadership; and believes that honourable Members should be trusted to make their own choice about whether to publicise or keep secret their choice of Labour candidate for Mayor of London.
