Investigation Of Nhs Staff
EDM number 889 in 1999-00, proposed by Harry Cohen on 23/06/2000.
That this House considers it alarming that the police and the Nursing Council agreed not to notify the employers of a nurse suspected of inducing the deaths of terminally-ill children for the six-month period whilst the police investigation was being carried out; considers that this gave no chance for the Health Service employers, whilst protecting the covert nature of the police investigation, to institute some protective arrangements for the children within this nurse's care; is worried at the apparent leisurely pace the police adopted to investigate such a serious matter; considers it a scandal that professional bodies who know of serious complaints against their members can delay for up to a year notifying their NHS managers; and calls upon the Government to address fully the serious implications raised by this case.
