That this House welcomes the Health and Safety Commission strategy statement recently launched by the Deputy Prime Minister which for the first time sets 10 year targets for reducing workplace illness by 20 per cent. and major injuries and fatalities by 10 per cent. drawing a line under the safety deregulation debate and accepting that UK workplaces need to be made safer; and in this context further welcomes the Government's commitment to legislate at the earliest opportunity for tougher penalties for health and safety offences and to assign health and safety responsibility to a named director of the company.
